9\/2025 on Work-Life Balance<\/h2>\n<p>On <strong>30 July 2025<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/boe\/dias\/2025\/07\/30\/pdfs\/BOE-A-2025-15741.pdf?utm_campaign=Normativa+2025&amp;utm_source=Normativa+30+de+juli...+%28Correo+masivo+creado+el+2025-07-30%29&amp;utm_medium=Email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Royal Decree-Law 9\/2025 of 29 July<\/a> was published in the <strong>Official State Gazette<\/strong> (BOE), extending the <strong>paid parental leave<\/strong> entitlement for the birth and care of a child.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>Royal Decree-Law<\/strong> amends the consolidated text of the <strong>Workers\u2019 Statute Act<\/strong>, approved by <strong>Royal Legislative Decree 2\/2015 of 23 October<\/strong>; the consolidated text of the <strong>Basic Statute for Public Employees<\/strong>, approved by <strong>Royal Legislative Decree 5\/2015 of 30 October<\/strong>; and the consolidated text of the <strong>General Social Security Act<\/strong>, approved by <strong>Royal Legislative Decree 8\/2015 of 30 October<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These amendments complete the implementation of <strong>Directive (EU) 2019\/1158<\/strong> of the <strong>European Parliament<\/strong> and <strong>Council<\/strong>, aimed at improving work-life balance for parents and carers.<\/p>\n<p>The directive, which replaces <strong>Council Directive 2010\/18\/EU<\/strong>, establishes minimum standards for <strong>paid parental leave<\/strong> and other family-related rights across EU member states.<\/p>\n<h2>Extension of paid parental leave for the birth and care of a child<\/h2>\n<p>This <strong>Royal Decree-Law<\/strong> extends <strong>paid parental leave<\/strong> by three weeks, bringing the total duration of leave for the birth and care of a child to <strong>nineteen weeks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Each parent may take these additional three weeks in two separate periods:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One week can be taken before the child turns twelve months old.<\/li>\n<li>The remaining two weeks can be taken at any time before the child turns eight years old.<\/li>\n<\/ul><div><br><\/div>\n<p>Now, the duration of <strong>parental leave in Spain<\/strong> for both mothers and fathers is nineteen weeks, with <strong>flexible periods<\/strong> that can be adapted to meet family needs.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>extended parental leave<\/strong> allows parents to better manage work and childcare responsibilities over time.<\/p>\n<h2>Amendment of Article 48 of the Workers\u2019 Statute<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Royal Decree-Law 9\/2025 of 29 July<\/strong> updates <strong>sections 4<\/strong> and <strong>5<\/strong> of <strong>Article 48<\/strong> of the <strong>Workers\u2019 Statute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These sections define the terms under which each parent can suspend their employment contract to take <strong>parental leave in Spain<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Six weeks <strong>immediately following childbirth<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Eleven weeks, or twenty-two in the case of single parenthood, to be taken at the worker\u2019s discretion, either consecutively or in separate periods, from the end of the initial six-week leave and up until the child turns twelve months old.<\/li>\n<li>Two weeks, or four in the case of single parenthood, for the care of the child, also to be taken at the worker\u2019s discretion in weekly blocks, either consecutively or separately, until the child turns eight years old.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Financial benefits during parental leave in Spain<\/h2>\n<p>These new leave entitlements and contract suspensions come with a financial benefit paid by Social Security.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation thus strengthens equitable access for <strong>paid parental leave to new parents<\/strong> and work-life balance.<\/p>\n<h2>Transitional provision to the extended parental leave<\/h2>\n<p>The additional two weeks (or four weeks in the case of single parenthood) granted for the care of a child under eight years old will apply to qualifying events occurring from 2 August 2024 onwards.<\/p>\n<p>These weeks of <strong>paid parental leave<\/strong>, whether taken as a suspension of the employment contract or as part of <strong>new-born leave<\/strong>, including <strong>new-born leave for fathers<\/strong>, can be requested starting from 1 January 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding financial benefit will also be
