public holidays 2027: the essentials for employers and employees

The Valencia public holidays 2027 were set by Decree 42/2026, of 20 March, of the Consell, published in the DOGV on 25 March 2026 [1].

The decree fixes 12 paid, non-recoverable holidays for the whole Valencian Community, from New Year’s Day to Christmas Day [1].

Saint John (24 June) and the Assumption (15 August), both holidays in 2026, are not on the 2027 regional list, while 1 November and 6 December return [1][3].

Each town adds two local holidays; Valencia City Council has approved Friday 22 January and Monday 5 April 2027, pending formal publication in the DOGV [6][7].

Spanish law caps paid public holidays at 14 a year, two of them local [4].

An employee who works on a public holiday is owed the hours worked plus at least 75%, unless they receive compensatory rest instead [5].

Why the 2027 calendar matters before the year begins

The Valencia public holidays 2027 decide when offices, courts and most businesses close, and when staff are entitled to a paid day off.

Employers need them now, because every company in Spain must draw up its annual work calendar and display it in each workplace [4].

Employees and newly arrived residents use them to plan leave, school breaks and trips home.

This guide sets out the official regional list, the two local holidays for Valencia city, the legal rules behind them and what happens when someone works on a holiday, as the position stood on 7 October 2026.

<blockquote style="border-left:4px solid town of the Valencian Community keep the 12 regional dates and replace the two local ones with those of their own municipality.

What changes compared with 2026

The 2026 calendar, set by Decree 100/2025, included Saint John on 24 June and the Assumption on 15 August [3].

Neither date appears in Decree 42/2026, so both will be ordinary working days across the region in 2027 unless a town chooses one of them as a local holiday [1].

In their place, the Valencia public holidays 2027 include All Saints’ Day on 1 November and Constitution Day on 6 December, which both fell on a Sunday in 2026 and fall on a Monday in 2027 [1][3].

Holy Week also moves earlier, with Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March, a week after Saint Joseph [1].

Saint John on 24 June was a regional holiday in 2026 but is not on the 2027 list in Decree 42/2026 [1][3].

Valencia city’s local holidays

The Valencia City Council plenary approved its two local holidays for 2027 in July 2026: Friday 22 January, Saint Vincent Martyr, the city’s patron saint, and Monday 5 April, Saint Vincent Ferrer [6].

The same plenary rejected a proposal to make 18 March, the eve of Saint Joseph, a local holiday instead [6].

Under Article 46 of Royal Decree 2001/1983, local holidays are fixed by the regional labour authority at the proposal of each town council and published in the regional official journal [5].

The regional resolution for 2026 was published in the DOGV on 14 November 2025, and it confirmed 22 January and 13 April as Valencia’s local holidays for that year [7].

The equivalent resolution for 2027 had not been published at the date of this guide, so the two city dates should be treated as approved by the council and awaiting formal confirmation.

Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March closes the city’s biggest festival, and our guide to the Fallas in Valencia explains what to expect in the days around it.

The legal framework: 14 holidays and who sets them

Article 37.2 of the Workers’ Statute provides that public holidays are paid and non-recoverable, and that there can be no more than 14 a year, two of them local [4].

Four dates must always be kept as national holidays: Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, 1 May and 12 October [4].

Royal Decree 2001/1983 lists the other national holidays and lets each region replace some of them with its own traditional days [5].

That is how the Valencian Community keeps Easter Monday and 9 October, and why the Valencia public holidays 2027 differ from those of Madrid or Catalonia.

Holidays that fall on a weekend

The Workers’ Statute moves the day off to the following Monday only when a national holiday falls on a Sunday, and regions may replace that Monday with one of their own traditional days [4].

No regional holiday in 2027 falls on a Sunday, so no Monday transfer is needed [1].

Three holidays fall on a Saturday: 1 May, 9 October and 25 December.

The law does not move a holiday that falls on a Saturday, so staff who do not normally work on Saturdays should check their collective agreement or contract for any specific rule.

The national calendar in the BOE

Each autumn the Directorate-General of Labour publishes in the BOE a table of all holidays in every region; for 2026 it was dated 17 October 2025 and published on 28 October [8].

The national resolution for 2027 had not appeared in the BOE by 6 October 2026, but it only collects the regional decrees, and for the Valencian Community the binding list is the one in Decree 42/2026 [1].

Spanish law allows a maximum of 14 paid public holidays a year, of which two are local [4].

Working on a public holiday

A public holiday is a paid day off that cannot be made up later, so an employer cannot ask staff to recover the hours on another day [4].

Article 47 of Royal Decree 2001/1983 covers the exception: when, for technical or organisational reasons, an employee cannot take the holiday, the company must pay the hours worked that day increased by at least 75%, on top of the normal weekly wage [5].

The employer can instead give compensatory rest, and collective agreements often set the terms for this [5].

Sectors that open on holidays, such as hospitality, health care and retail, usually build these rules into their agreements and rotas.

Public holidays are separate from annual leave, which must be at least 30 calendar days a year and cannot be replaced by money [4].

<div style="border-left:4px solid now

The Valencia public holidays 2027 affect rotas, payroll and client deadlines, so a short checklist helps.

<table staff based in another municipality.

Asking staff to make up the hours of a holiday on another day.

Paying holiday work at the normal rate without compensatory rest.

Treating a bridge day as a public holiday when it is only a company or agreement decision.

Long weekends and bridges in 2027

For employees and families, the Valencia public holidays 2027 produce several long weekends in the city.

January: Friday 1 January and Friday 22 January each give a three-day weekend in Valencia city.

March: Friday 19 March, then Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March, give two long weekends in a row.

April: Monday 5 April, Saint Vincent Ferrer, gives the city a second long weekend straight after Easter.

Autumn: Tuesday 12 October and Monday 1 November fall next to a weekend.

December: Monday 6 December and Wednesday 8 December fall in the same week.

A bridge day between a holiday and a weekend is not a public holiday, and staff need to use annual leave for it unless their agreement or employer says otherwise.

Our ideas for day trips from Valencia suit these long weekends, and newcomers can find more practical advice in our guide to moving to Valencia.

Holidays and official deadlines

The regional resolution on local holidays notes that these dates also count as non-working days for administrative and court deadlines, and that public offices and courts close on them [7].

A tax, immigration or court deadline that ends on one of the Valencia public holidays 2027 therefore usually moves to the next working day.

Foreign workers with residence and work permits can read our guide to <a
