{"id":649,"date":"2021-03-02T17:49:30","date_gmt":"2021-03-02T16:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/romantic-boyd.31-170-100-185.plesk.page\/?p=649"},"modified":"2026-04-20T16:32:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T14:32:01","slug":"green-card-nie-and-tie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delaguialuzon.com\/en\/blog\/green-card-nie-and-tie\/","title":{"rendered":"Differences between Green Card, NIE and TIE"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"649\" class=\"elementor elementor-649\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ea6439c e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"7ea6439c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5491a8b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5491a8b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The difference between a <strong>NIE and TIE<\/strong> can be confusing for some.<\/p><p>As a European citizen, you enjoy freedom of movement and establishment in Spain.<\/p><p>However, these rights are subject to rules concerning their content and procedure.<\/p><p>On the one hand, <strong>freedom of movement<\/strong> allows a European citizen to be present in Spain for 90 days, i.e. to stay without intending to stay for more than a 90-day period, without any specific formalities.<\/p><p>On the other hand, <strong>freedom of establishment or residence<\/strong> allows a European citizen to live and <a href=\"https:\/\/delaguialuzon.com\/en\/blog\/setting-up-a-business-in-spain\/\">work in Spain<\/a> for an unlimited period, i.e. for more than 90 days, subject to completing the registration formalities explained below, such as obtaining a Spanish <strong>NIE and TIE<\/strong> number.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-582a863e e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"582a863e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f58dca7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f58dca7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Foreigner Identification Number (NIE)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ee8cd51 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ee8cd51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Let&#8217;s begin by understanding the <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><strong>difference between TIE and NIE<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p>When we talk about the NIE we must differentiate the document from the number itself.<\/p><p><strong>What does NIE stand for in Spain<\/strong>?\u00a0<\/p><p>It stands for <b>N\u00famero de Identificaci\u00f3n de Extranjero.<\/b><\/p><p>The NIE Number is assigned to every <a href=\"https:\/\/delaguialuzon.com\/en\/blog\/working-in-spain-as-a-foreigner\/\">foreign national<\/a> who starts any kind of economic activity in Spain, either a capital investment, renting or buying a building, or studying.<\/p><p>The NIE is a tax identifier, it is not a residence permit.<\/p><p>Consequently, the document bearing the <a href=\"https:\/\/delaguialuzon.com\/en\/blog\/why-how-obtain-nie-in-spain\/\">NIE number<\/a> is not a valid document to identify a person. This is easily deduced by the fact that it does not carry a photo, and it is only valid for three months (the maximum stay of free movement).<\/p><p>However, the allocation of the NIE Number is permanent, it does not matter that the document bearing the NIE or their renovations has expired.\u00a0<\/p><p>Likewise, Spain uses this number for the other documents that we will explain.<\/p><p>This is the reason why many people talk about the NIE when they really mean the TIE or a green card Spain.<\/p><p>The NIE Number is assigned by the Spanish Police or the Spanish Consulates after filing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exteriores.gob.es\/Embajadas\/budapest\/hu\/ServiciosConsulares\/PublishingImages\/Paginas\/K%C3%BClf%C3%B6ldi-%C3%A1llampolg%C3%A1rok-Azonos%C3%ADt%C3%B3-Sz%C3%A1ma-NIE\/EX-15%20%28English%20instructions%20for%20completing%20the%20form%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">EX15 form<\/a> accompanied by a supporting file.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7dab15d9 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"7dab15d9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2d7386cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2d7386cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Registration of European citizens: The Green Card<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22b723d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22b723d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Any European national wanting to stay in Spain for more than three months or to work as an employee or <a href=\"https:\/\/delaguialuzon.com\/en\/blog\/becoming-self-employed-in-spain\/\">self-employed person<\/a> must register in the <strong>National Register of Community Citizens<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This is done by appearing before the Police of the Province where you have decided to live, accompanying the EX-18 form and the documents appropriate to the chosen modality of residence (employee, self-employed, retired, student, or savings). The Police, after checking the file provided, will immediately issue on the spot:\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>A receipt is known as the &#8220;Green Card&#8221;.\u00a0<\/li><li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">The allocation of a Spanish NIE number, if the applicant has not obtained it in advance.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><p>It should be noted that the Green Card Spain is not a document identifying the holder.<\/p><p>It is just a receipt for having completed the registration process. European nationals living in Spain are identified with their identity documents (passport, C.N.I., Personalausweis, &#8230;). This proceeding also applies to their relatives bearing a European passport who are joining him\/her.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5a7a339c e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5a7a339c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-903ddf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"903ddf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The T.I.E.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7301c390 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7301c390\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Non-UE foreigners must apply for a Spanish residence permit.<\/p><p>As mentioned before, they may have an <strong>NIE number<\/strong> from previously having had any kind of relationship with Spain (student, real-state owner, business partnership) even if it didn&#8217;t imply residence.<\/p><p>But <strong>what is a TIE<\/strong>? And what&#8217;s the <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><strong>difference between TIE and NIE<\/strong> exactly?<\/span><\/p><p>Once the Residence permit is granted, the foreigner must ask for an Identity Card, called the &#8220;<strong>Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero TIE<\/strong>&#8221; (Foreigner Identity Card).<\/p><p>That is extended to spouses, descendants, or accompanying parents of Spanish or European citizens when they hold a non-UE passport (EX-19).<\/p><p>Those relatives of a European national must get a special permit using EX19 proceedings and then request the dispatch of the TIE (identity card).\u00a0<\/p><p>We must point out that <strong>British citizens after<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/delaguialuzon.com\/en\/blog\/british-expats-brexit\/\">Brexit<\/a> are due to exchange their former &#8220;green cards&#8221; for a TIE (<strong>EX-23 form<\/strong>).<\/p><p>Until now, they were not compelled to do it but this could change in the future.<\/p><p>Regardless, this card can make things easier for British residents, so it is a good idea to apply for it.<\/p><p>The document bears the owner&#8217;s information (date of birth, country of origin, domicile, photo, etc.) and the type of authorisation.<\/p><p>This document uses the NIE number previously assigned to the holder as an identifier.<\/p><p>Consequently, this is what causes confusion between the words NIE (number) and what is a TIE (card).<\/p><div>\u00a0<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div
